Within the Shinobi World, Ninja are often recognized due to their level of skill. Strength, Leadership, Charisma and the like. Ranks are what is used to differentiated and categorize ninja. There is a total of six ranks in all.

Academy students (忍者学校生 - Akademī-sei): Academy Students make up the student body of the Academy, where they are trained and prepared for life as a shinobi. They are not an actual part of the shinobi force, as they are still in the process of mastering the very basics of the ninja lifestyle. The grand majority of Academy Students are small children, ages ranging from 6-12. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is E-Rank.

Genin (下忍 - Low Ninja): Genin are the lowest level of ninja and also the ones that display the most difference in power. When they become genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy – being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are almost entirely risk-free jobs of manual labour, or, rarely, on C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work that have a very low possibility of risk to the ninja involved. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is D-Rank.

Chūnin (中忍 - Middle Ninja): Chūnin are ninja who are qualified to guide other ninja and lead missions. Chūnin have reached a level of maturity and ability that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess. Genin who do not have the skills to become chūnin are weeded out in the Chūnin Exams. Many Chūnin move on to become teachers at the Academy or are sent to do similar jobs. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is C-Rank.

Tokubetsu Jōnin (特別上忍 - Special High Ninja): Sometimes known as Tokujō for short are ninja who, rather than all-around jōnin training, have jōnin-level ability in a specific area or skill, much like warrant officers in real-world militaries. They are elite specialists in their areas and are often assigned as subordinates to regular jōnin when their services are needed. Some are even qualified to lead squads of Genin. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is B-Rank.

Jōnin (上忍 - High Ninja): Jōnin are generally highly-experienced shinobi with great individual skill who serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced jōnin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered to be the greatest difficulty). It is not unusual for jōnin to go on missions alone. Jōnin are commonly able to use at least two types of elemental chakra, be able to do proficient genjutsu, and have decent taijutsu skills. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is A-Rank.

Kage (影 - Shadow): Kage is a title reserved for the leader of a hidden village. The five Kage of the major hidden villages are collectively known as the Gokage (五影 - Five Shadows). A Kage oversees the activities of their village, from sending ninja on missions to making the hard decisions regarding the safety of their people. A village's Kage is generally acknowledged as its most powerful ninja. The Wanderer and Criminal equivalent is S-Rank.

The Samurai of the Land of Iron have a different ranking system than those of the shinobi. Though both are used to denote one's skills and prowess, the ranks of the samurai are also military in nature and, thus, give them military authority over lower ranks. They are:

Shinpei (新兵 - Recruit): Shinpei are the samurai equivalent to Academy Students. They have either joined willingly or have been drafted into the Land of Iron's military force. They are trained and prepared to become a samurai. Though not part of the army, there have been cases where small groups of recruits are taken out into the frontlines to help them learn. Recruits are general varied, from small children to grown adults.

Heisotsu (兵卒 - Private): The main body of the military force, Heisotsu are the basic soldier. They are usually the ones seen about villages and such, policing it for any small-time criminals. Heisotsu are usually commanded in squads with a single higher-up. All higher ranks can order Heisotsu about.

Gochō (伍長 - Corporal):

Gunsō (軍曹 - Sergeant):

Chūi (中尉 - Lieutenant):

Taishō (大将 - General):
